Shrewsbury Regatta - 14th May 2011

This was our first regatta of the season and we wanted to enter the IM2 8+ that we normally race in but with Warren away and newly married Simon (congratulations) off honeymooning we were short of two bowsiders. But not to worry as sunkissed Newark alumnus, Andy ‘Peggles’ Hare, returned from his very long jolly Down Under to save the day. Also called back into action from the wilderness of semi-retirement was Eon ‘BS’ Forman. So the crew was

Now with a complete crew we headed to Shrewsbury but not before getting lost about 10mins from Newark, having argued with the Sat-Nav we managed to get there and the regatta was being held on very picturesque part of the river.

 

Our first race was a semi-final after lunchtime and by the time we got there Newark’s coxless pair and women’s novice four had already been knocked out so it was up to us to take home a win for Newark. The start of the race was staggered and we had the inside station so the plan was to quickly try and draw level so we could use the bend to pull ahead but it turned out to be a lot easier than that. We opened up a significant lead in just a few hundred meters and then cruised to the finish.

Now we had to wait for the final but one of the crews in the other semi-final had scratched and so we were to face a fresh crew in the next race, again we had the inside station and went off with the same plan. Bewdley put up a stronger fight against our start but were no match when we pushed on the bend and left them behind us, unlike before we pushed all the way to line and won easily. Having waited a while for a race since the Head of the River, it was good to keep the momentum going with the 8+ but this was just a warm up for much tougher races coming up.
